Prime Minister Narendra Modi will today be conferred the Global Goalkeeper Award by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The PM is being awarded for his leadership and commitment to improving access to sanitation in India. The PM had launched the Swachch Bharat Mission on October 2, 2014, and this mission has greatly improved access to sanitation in India, especially rural areas. At present, 98 percent of villages in India have access to sanitation, as opposed to only 38 percent just four years ago. The government hopes to end open defecation in India by October 2 this year.
